CALM (+ ENERGY): Most Important Mineral for Women at Midlife and in Motherhood is ....

Magnesium! ❤️

To start, here’s a fun fact (and the reason I chose a picture of 2 women running into the ocean for this blog!) :

* Magnesium is found in the ocean! My friend Shelley had stopped getting headaches while at Savary Island and wondered if I knew anything about Magnesium and ocean water and sure enough her daily swims were giving her body access to a form of Magnesium that is absorbed through the skin and she was reaping the benefits ! 🙌

Here are 6 reasons why it’s so great for our unique female metabolism and hormone balance :

  1. Mood: Balancer: it really is a chill pill! It supports our bodies to relax and positively impact symptoms of low mood ad anxiety.

  2. PMS and Low Libido Rescue: great in balancing hormones through helping estrogen get metabolized properly in the body..

  3. Improves Sleep Quality: Before bed is the most common time of day I recommend Magnesium. I have found it helpful to help women wind down before bed and to decrease the chance of a mid sleep awakening. I like the forms: Magnesium bisglycinate and Magnesium threonate the best for sleep and brain health (Threonate crosses the blood-brain barrier which makes it a great choice post-concussion or for anyone wanting to support their brain health.)

  4. HPA Axis Support:  Mthis is where the body does its signalling regarding stress and hormone balance: the hypothalamus-Pituitary adrenal axis. Adaptogens are great for this too. Magnesium is helpful in keeping cortisol spikes on the low through its impact on calming our system and helping balance blood sugar through improving insulin-sensitivity.

  5. Energy Production Key: Eventhough increased energy isn’t the first thing I think of when I think of Magnesium it is a key player in the energy production in our cells mitochondria and definitely plays a role in our energy levels. I like to use the Magnesium Malate form for addressing this and recommend a morning and/or lunch dose for this form.

  6. Beyond hormones, relaxation and energy:  migraines/headaches, leg cramps, high blood pressure, heart health, and constipation are a few common symptoms that benefit from magnesium supplementation. For constipation a mixed formula is what I mainly use with clients including a citrate form to help move things along (Magnesium complex by Seroyal - see link below to check out my favourites), Magnesium glycinate is a gentler on the gut form.

I know it can be hard to know what supplements are worth taking and which can be focused on with diet alone. Nutrition optimization is one of the foundational pillars I work on with clients! Magnesium is one of those minerals that more than often shows up as deficient in women’s diets and women report feeling a higher level of well-being tin the ways above when taking it.💃 Honestly, it’s in my top 4 supplement suggestions. ✔️
